The family name 'Ehlermann' is made up of two nouns. These are the two terms 'Ehler' and 'Mann'. 'Ehler' is derived from the word stems 'athal' or 'adal' -> nobility and from 'hari' -> army in the sense of warrior. From 'Athalhari' or 'Adalhari' developed in our language area 'Ethelhere' and later 'Ehler'. Its genitive (Ehlers) is also a widespread family name. The word 'man' is a common name attachment, which was often added as a pet form or belittling to common family names. Ultimately, the family name 'Ehlermann' can therefore be freely translated as 'noble warrior'. Another interpretation with a similar background comes from the Old High German 'Agilhari', which can be translated as 'the capable, flexible in the army'.
